What’s the average fee for private music lessons in Japan?

I’m moving to Japan soon with an English teaching gig but since I have a bachelor’s in piano with a decent performance resume, and am good with kids, I’d like to see if I can make a bit teaching piano on the side. Can somebody offer info on an average fee appropriate for a person with a bachelor’s to charge? I will be in the Osaka-Kobe area, if that would make the fee higher than the Japan average (which I’m sure it would.) As a random shot I’m thinking 3,000 yen per hour, 2,000 per half hour–the equivalent of which would be slightly undercharging in the somewhat-large U.S. city I currently live in. Does that sound right, high, low?

I think it depends on where you got the bachelor’s degree. If you have the degree from a well know university, you can probably charge more. But if you don’t, ¥1250 ~ 2500
yen or less would be appropriate.

When I was in Japan, I had a private piano teacher who was a graduate from one of the best music schools/universities in Japan. The lesson fee was actually ¥5000 yen but that was for 4 lessons/4 hours. She didn’t charge a lot but I lived in a country side. So the price was very appropriate in the area.

Well, Japanese people care a lot about where you got a degree when it comes to taking a private piano lesson. So the school you went to is not really known, it’s a bit harder for you to get students. Besides, many of them probably prefer to get a lesson from someone who can speak Japanese. But if you got the degree from a well know univeristy, probably it might not matter if you can’t speak Japanese well or not.
