"House rotating Arian" (house of the antenna rotating) by Albert Robida for his book The Vingtime century, a conception of nineteenth century life in the twentieth century

Although many works now considered a pioneer in the genre were published in 1960 and 1970, the term steampunk has emerged in the 1980s as an alternative language in the playing the cyberpunk. He seems to have been invented by science fiction author KW Jeter, who was trying to find a general term for works by Tim Powers (author of The Anubis Gates, 1983), James Blaylock (Homunculus, 1986) and himself (Morlock Night, 1979 and Infernal Devices, 1987) which took place in a 19 th century (typically Victorian) agricultural and conventions of Victorian fiction imitates real speculative as The Time Machine by HG Wells. In a letter to Locus magazine of science fiction, Printed in April 1987 issue, Jeter wrote:

Dear Locus,

Enclosed is a copy of my novel Morlock Night 1979, I thank you for your being good enough for the road Faren Miller, as it is a fundamental element of proof in the great debate about this in "the Powers / Blaylock / fantasy triumvirate Jeter "was written in the" gonzo-historical time "first. Obviously, I found a notice in the March Locus to be flattering.

Personally, I think Victorian fantasies are going to be the next well, until he can come with an adjustment period of collective Powers, Blaylock and myself. Something on the basis of appropriate technology at the time as "steampunk" perhaps …

Steampunk was influenced by and often adopts the style of 19th century science fiction of Jules Verne, HG Wells, Mark Twain and Mary Shelley. Rudyard Kipling's "With e-mail night: a history of 2000 "and" Easy as ABC "could easily describe steampunk.

Several important works of fiction to the development kind of took place before the genre has a name. Titus Alone by Mervyn Peake, published in 1959, anticipated many of the tropes of steampunk. It is perhaps one of the first major events to invoke the spirit of steampunk was the original television series Wild Wild West, which took place on CBS from 1965 to 1969, while the film version of the 1999 series has been one of the first movement steampunk contemporary images.

Keith Laumes contributed early for the genre with his series Imperium that the first delivery, the worlds of the Empire, was published in 1962. Ronald W. Clark pump with novel 1967 of Queen Victoria was cited as another early influence on the genre, like Michael Moorcock in 1971 Warlord of the Air (the first volume of steampunk trilogy Moorcock A nomad time flows, continued in 1974 and completed in 1981). Harry Harrison's 1973 novel A Transatlantic Tunnel, Hurrah! portrait of a British Empire in 1973 AD another, full of atomic locomotives, ships flying the coal, submarines ornate Victorian dialogue.

Because the term KW Jeter was invented in 1979 new Morlock Night is generally regarded as having established the genre.

William Gibson and Bruce Sterling in 1990 novel The Difference Engine is credited often bring widespread awareness of this kind among fans of science fiction. This novel applies the principles of the writings of cyberpunk Gibson and Sterling other Victorian steam as proposed by the Charles Babbage mechanical computer that he called a difference engine (later most commonly used version engine is known as analysis), was built and has led to the dawn of the Information Age more than a century "ahead."

The first use of the word in a title was in Paul Di Filippo Steampunk Trilogy 1995, consisted three novels: "Victoria", "Hottentots" and "Walt and Emily", which, respectively, imagine replacing the Queen Victoria by a clone human / newt, an invasion of Massachusetts by Lovecraftian monsters, and a love story between Walt Whitman and Emily Dickinson.

Alan Moore and Kevin O'Neill in 1999 the League of the book series of Extraordinary Gentlemen (the film adaptation and after 2003) greatly popularized the comic steampunk genre and helped grow in the dominant fiction.

An anthology of steampunk fiction was published in 2008 by Tachyon Publications, edited by Ann and Jeff Vandermeer and appropriately titled Steampunk, which tells the story of James Blaylock, including "Narbondo" trilogy is usually considered steampunk Jay Lake, author of the novel the main wharf, sometimes called "clockpunk" including Michael Moorcock, and Jess Nevins, famed for his annotations to the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.

Although most of the original steampunk works had a historical setting, later works often place items in a steampunk fantasy world with little relation to a given time. Historical steampunk tends to be more "science fictional": presenting an alternative history, real places and people in history with different technology. steampunk fantasy world, like China Miville Perdido Street Station and Jackelian Stephen Hunt novels, however, presents a realm of fantasy steampunk entirely imaginary, often populated by legendary creatures coexisting with the era of steam or anachronistic technologies.
