25 Tips for New Teachers

New teachers have many difficulties during its first two years. They spend their days in a test of the steady-state error. I know I did. I'm sorry for students who were in my class at first. Since then, however, I learned from my mistakes, and I now I really enjoy my days as a college professor. I had the privilege of teachers mentor several students over the years and have done everything possible for their first year a little easier to share tips and strategies I learned. I chose 25 to begin with, but there are many more that I share on my site. Teaching is a great profession. It a job where you can not make much money, but make a difference. Hopefully these tips will make their first years a little easier.

1. I'm Perfect – If you are a teacher, do not make the mistake of telling your children about one of their shortcomings – for example, the teacher's son my friend told the class that has ADD. Kids can go home and tell their parents, and from the outset, your level drops respect. Give students the impression that you are perfect – he knows everything – and the chance of being enrolled in a master class in surprise. If this is your first year teaching, do not let your children know. They, of course, lose a little respect for you. You not to lie. When asked, just tell them that this is his first year at this school. Then change the subject. Respect is all in a class. Do not give students the opportunity to lose respect for you. This will make things easier for you.

2 -. Add always assume that somewhere there are students who are not listening when giving oral instructions. Keep written instructions about hand – on the map or in a brochure. If not you frustrated by having to repeat instructions over and over again.

3. Assume the worst – Assume that each student has a family life and school is terrible the only safe place for them. Have a positive influence on the lives of their students. Suppose that their bad behavior is the result of the terrible family life. This course will be easier to treat. N may be true for most students, but supposed to be, his words of encouragement and warm smile will make a world of difference for one or two students to whom home life is terrible reality.

4. Birthday List – students celebrate his birthday. It's a small thing, but it's something that my children are watching with interest. In my class, I put up with a sponge activity called "Today in American history." I milestones that happened in our history that day, conceived in my Power Point, and students that are copied. I'm going by the events and their importance. I always check my list morning's Birthday, and if a student has a birthday that day, I add important historical events. Always come with a story I will remember this day forever. The earth shook. The birds were extra strong, etc. Then I mentioned how since that day, the world has never been the same. (I must say it was better.) Children love it.

5. Re-Do – It's OK to change your plans at the last minute. Sometimes you get in school, and the plan he had prepared the night before does not work for one reason or another. Do not feel bad if you have to pull something together at the last minute. If this happens too often, however, can be time to reassess the planning sessions. 🙂

6 -. Plan Ahead Get things ready in advance. With most students, must be effective over time. Too much free time will give students stronger and it becomes difficult get back to work. All you can do in advance will make things easier for you.

7. Take the stress test – tests are not so serious. In each trial, always include a "gift". This is a question has nothing to do with the subject. If the student does well, it's an extra point. If they are wrong, it does not hurt your grade. Above all, I use puzzle questions, like: Johnny's mother had four children. One was named April, and another was appointed in May and another was appointed in June What was the name of the fourth child? Most children understand and respond, Johnny, but not others, and they will feel worse about losing the gift of do the lack of real issues. You can find these questions on the web. Just Google puzzle. All you can do to remove some of the "stress" test will help students do better.

. 8 Do not Yell – Do not work without shouting. I learned early in my career than shouting. only serves to show students what can be nervous. Raising his voice in anger, students win. I had many students in my class of problems in recent years. I have some time, but never raise the voice of frustration. If the class is very strong, I sit back and wait. Once the class is defined, follow. There are times when students take more what to expect to resolve. That's when I'll start calling people names. I say, "Johnny" and wait to get their attention, "We awaits you. "Most of the time students will realize that awaits me, and start with" Shhhhhh. "There will, however, limited Sometimes when I raise my voice, but they are what I call "strategic detonations." I, not students, determine when I scream, and when I cry, is to make a very important point. Sometimes maybe all year twice – sometimes never. If a teacher asks his Voice on a regular basis, over time students to be insensitive and not having an effect. There are times where it causes students to getting nervous. Make every effort not to raise his voice. Wait for students left – and then scream.

9. The countdown – Use the countdown method. Whenever you give an activity, give students a time limit, and the clock ticks away, keeps recall the remaining time. Students who spend time normally will contact the task when he recalls the shortness of time. Students need time limits. I love deadlines. I love deadlines. They do not know.

10 -. How Nice Try not to give / cool names Cute their work. Instead of simply calling them "video notes" I call them "IDK" notes (not know). Even if the assignment is one those annoying is the response activities, the book will give you a cool name that "History Treasure Hunt," students see it as something more the boring job security – and most students. Children perceive school work like that. If you say "Here is a spreadsheet review the rules of the State ", children respond with a groan. However, if you say it is a "TITE" sheet, they say, "A piece of what?" You can then say: "It's a 'this-sheet is too easy." You get a different reaction to their students according to how to present the activity. Believe me. It works.

11. Assistants Celebrity – Keep up with WHO and what's popular on television, music, movies, and include them in their work somehow. Add their names to tests or spreadsheets or games class. He cites the words of a popular song that you give a lecture. See how children who do not pay attention to encourage. I never imagined that Taylor Lautner was so popular, but the kids really care if his name mentioned. Now I have to find pictures of a singer named Justin Bieber. It is supposed to be the next big thing.

12. Keep 'Em Quiet – Always have some sort of activity quiet loans for students who complete their first attempts. Otherwise, students begin to talk and make noise, while other students follow the evidence. They need something specific to do. Are easily hidden and can be created online for free. I know that reading is more "educational" but students are more likely to end soon and talk are students who probably will not choose to read a book. That's why I planned this option.

13. We're going to win – Do not enter a "Burn" contest with their students. A "burn" the competition is a conversation that the use of sarcasm, to "burn" each other with insults pleasure. Remember that children are, and whether it can be good to be bent in to, perhaps unable to take, and finally, I do not want to lose this contest their peers, they resort to insults which may cross the line. I love having fun with my students. They are fun and get along, but I Always keep the line between teacher and pupil visible. If you get one of these contests of sarcasm, we will save time. My answer is "good." Then go.

14. A Test – Do not leave the evidence where the stress state. Earlier this year, ask an experienced teacher to tell you what issues are most likely to be on the test. All standards are in the state test. This you can better plan their lessons. For example, if you have a great lesson in two weeks on Lewis and Clark, you can change that, one question in All test questions by Lewis and Clark – at least that's how our state is proof. What is sad, because the expedition of Lewis and Clark is so incredible, and children learn love. (I spend much time in anyway Shhh.)

15 -. Shoot For The Moon If you make a new project, trying to do with his upper class to achieve in the first place, it is to their credit or advanced degree. The reason I say it is they most often give you the best job. Students in classes seem to compete for quality and creativity, giving you the best "shows" Working for you to show your other classes. You want to show the best examples of other classes to aspire to.

16 -. Last week, sure some are available for students to do during the last week. Children usually take a week before the end of the school. If you try to give a final test or major project, it is possible that many students are absent or not really at school longer. I know they are taught to teach the final, but you can not get much to children in the last day of school. I can use that day for my new year's speech, "where they encourage you to do your best and ignore the negative influences in their lives. I also want to show a slideshow of final year students. It is always fun.

17. How many of you – when conferences or to give information to the class, ask questions like "Is this …?"," How many of you so …?" My student teacher did when he was their keynote address. They talked about their trip, then asked, "…?" How many students were hired and included in the discussion. I want to keep my questions to which they can only respond with an increase in their hands. Otherwise, you may need a question answered with a long history of time, and most students who are good at telling stories.

18. One bullet at a time – In a lecture with a PowerPoint presentation, and you want students to copy what is on the screen, you want your slideshow to view a sentence or a bullet at a time. What happens in the classroom is when the entire page is revealed and students are informed that they are copied, the students were too busy copying all the notes down to listen to the conference. What I do is talk about the details then that reveal students to copy. In addition, only put important information on the screen. You can not give students the opportunity to paraphrase or to decide what information is noteworthy. What should I tell my son to tell the teachers for children to write everything on the screen word by word. The teacher not the student decides what is essential. I tell them to keep well Short, sweet and accurate. Dales fundamental fact, and let your reading complex. Do not put your drawing on the screen. Be too much for children to write.

. 19 Addition of the Passion – Include your hobby or passion into their courses. Listen to the horses or cars or fashion hot rod, try integrate it into their classrooms. For example, I always liked to write poems. I can also play piano and guitar, so I fact is ridiculous to write little songs on my content – history. I just finished writing a report on the events that led the American Revolution. It was a bit cheesy and worthless, but the kids loved it. Makes the lesson stand out in their minds. What happens is that passion that they feel a passion shows in his lesson, and that enthusiasm is contagious. The children were excited about the lesson. In addition, you will appreciate more too.

20Positive peer. Pressure of competition between classes use increase the participation of volunteers. Today I was allocated a certain amount of time for presentations. I found, however, did not receive enough volunteers to make. I started thinking that I can have a lot of time, and 8th year who is having trouble. I started counting aloud the number of students available. I told them that another class can have more volunteers, but they also said he was not a contest. Do not believe me. Suddenly, the students began to press other students raise their hands today. I had more presenters, and had cut one of the activities of the order the day. Sometimes peer pressure can be a teacher friend.

21 -. Hey parents to create a generic letter that allows parents know that you are concerned about the status of the student. Make a list of about 6 basic concerns such as: not doing homework, not studying for exams, do not concentrate in class, talks too much, did not supply, etc, you have to think the most pressing concerns you have in your class. Create this document, but leave the name blank. Start with: A mother of _________________. Then write a short paragraph to say something, I am concerned about your child's progress. The reason is:

Then have the reasons in a column to the page with a blank box next to each concern. Finish with a closing statement that I hope to work with your child improve in these areas. Please feel free to contact me …. Etc. Include a signature line of parents. Now you can fill one of these for any child who is not doing well, check the box and send it with the child. The child will give parents, to read, sign and return to you. If it is off, then you call, but if you return, saving you a home to call. Parents were notified. The company confirmed. Before sending, however, ask someone in your school to translate for the language of the subculture dominant in their school. Printed in English on one side and the other language back. Make it specific as possible, even if you do not know the language, you know the number three in the case of one side is the same in another. It is communication.

22 -. Collection project when I can collect large projects of my students, I know who did and who did not because it is an important part of graduation. If I do not check, then we will not know until all graduation projects, and by then it may be too late to mount children not to put your project is an easy way for a student to pass through the cracks. So what I do is to tell the children make your project on your desktop. Then call your name in my notebook. I ask them to show your project. Students show me your poster or flash drive (Which stores your Powerpoint) or whatever your project. I am writing in the notebook exactly what they have – a poster, a PowerPoint presentation, a plateau Game, an album, so I opted for the project. It gives me the opportunity to chastise those who have nothing, and protects me from a student comes and said he gave it, but I lost it. (Yes, that happens.)

23. Creative use of time – always schedule a day of group work after a big project is due. Finding time to graduation projects will always be difficult. You need to spend more time on large projects because it is an important part of their degree. Before, I spent hours after school or during my preparation of the draft classification monsters. Now what I do is quality during the time that students work in groups. You can always follow and help but for most, I can use this time to qualify. The creative use of time is a skill that every teacher has to learn. If it does not burn quickly.

24. Paperclip Power – Keep a supply of clips at the front of the classroom. Most teachers have at your desk or in a pretty package at his peak office, which is good, but needs some near the front of the room where you teach. You will always be a collection type of class work or at home, and having to go to his office to get a clip takes time, not much, but it only takes a second time to allow Johnny to do something something that takes longer to do things on track. The thing I'm not cute clip container. I just remove the top of the box and leave it in my box Letter Board of Directors. It works just as well.

25. Be the light – what you find in the many meetings where everyone is talking about how the student is doing or how does the school system or the administration is ineffective. Do not fall into the darkness of the cynical (cool word). Be positive voice in the crowd. They can call the naivete or ignorance, but who's cares? I saw too many young teachers are losing their love of teaching, and hanging around the teacher or teachers complain pessimistic. New teachers who bring attitude Save-The World-vis the school. I like going out with them because it is contagious, and sometimes I have to remind myself why I became a teacher. Let there be light!

We wish you much success in the classroom!
