Kevin O'Connor of London Energy has created a series of books under the main title of "The Ultimate Tone. "These books are truly unique and carefully designed for the Do-It-Yourself (DIY) guitar tube amp lover charm and amplifier manufacturer. Books a house "feel" and … All illustrations are hand-copy books are printed on 8.5? x11? paper and clearly linked to plastic sheeting spines plastic. There are six books in the series now with the last published in spring 2008. You can buy the whole series at once and get a savings modest, but I think you should consider buying one at a time and digest the fly, creating projects along the road. A key point, if … does not necessarily buy them in numerical order. I recommend the following sequence:

  1. The final volume of the ringer 3 – Generations of Tone
  2. Ultimate Tone Volume 5 – Capture your
  3. The final volume of the ring 2 – Systems Approach to the soundstage Nirvana
  4. The volume of Ultimate 4 – Advanced Techniques modern guitar amp design
  5. The Ultimate Tone – Modifying and Custom Amplifiers Building Tube Guitar
  6. Your last volume 6 – Tone timeless built for the future today

The last volume of the tone 3 – Generations of Tone

This is the most important book of the series for the first tube amp manufacturer.

Chapters 2 to 4, lay the foundation for building good DIY tube amplifier Fill a good grounding in the art, clothing and other wiring techniques lead, including methods for mechanical assembly design that the terminal blocks, turret and eyelet boards.

The following chapters of each amplifier emblematic of selection "particularly emblematic each amplifier to be a prototypical example of the amplifiers in its class, and discussed in detail the topology of the circuit, unique tonal characteristics and defects that are lethal as the product is known for. Kevin provides original devices, then shows how to apply the techniques detailed in previous chapters to improve performance and reliability of the icon without damaging the field. The scheme is redrawn, and solutions are provided mechanical designs are developed for each chapter and a comprehensive project to build self-amplifier DIY.

This process is repeated for several variations of the field in Chapter 5 (this chapter great influence on my own project asymmetrical amplifier) then in rapid succession: the Bassman, Plexi, 800, Bull Dog, AC-30 amplifiers Portaflex, SVT Bass Master, special custom guitar Mate Herzog and Laney are processed.

If you do buy a book for your guitar amp hobby craft that had definitely recommend this.

The Ultimate Tone Volume 5 – Capture your

Volume 5 collects in Volume 3 left, with a project-oriented approach and some amplifiers sophisticated solutions DIY tube guitar and low.

The book begins with a chapter structure for the operation of vacuum tube called a "tube sound," followed by a chapter on electronics guitar and features of collective management.

The next two chapters are small projects: Sigma for switching and Triple X to change the amplifier.

Chapters 5 and 6 are in Transformers … important elements, but it made me yawn, sorry.

From Chapter 7, all stops are pulled out and the sky is planned … Mayor (200W), Soma 84 (EL84 amplifier), Standard (Standard Power Preamp London 1995 with a 50W amplifier with four-valve power) Doppelsonde (mixed types of feeding tubes), AX84 (discussing the initial objective of a low-power amplifier), Kelly (4 6V6s 50W) and several other smaller projects.

One of my favorite projects fact was back at work based on tube preamp pedal incomparable Kevin Hotbox Chapter 16. I built this pedal in a true-to-peer style really (ie, terminal) in a bottom bracket tube Doug Hoffman replacing a Baxandall tone stack and return to work earlier values for more Dumble-esqe (type of non-human resources management).

What would you do with an amplifier that matches the style of Yngwie Malmsteen? See Chapter 18, "the Swede."

The final volume of the ring 2 – Systems Approach to stage his nirvana

Volume 2 is not project oriented. Much of the book, chapters 2 to 5 source addresses supply tips and an overview of power amplifiers, there including tubes, solid state power amplifiers and hybrid. Chapter 3, amplifiers tube has very practical information on changes and corrections Marshall and Fender circuit polarization.

As the chapters first and last volume 2 the best. The first chapter is a brief discussion of the stages of its and how to configure a computer on stage for the best audience / group experience. The last chapter 6, is called "The Pillars of tone" and in this chapter tone of the main contributors to system-level block design tube amplifier Guitar examined one by one and Kevin provided a very valuable tone shaping along the preamplifier or amplifier.

The volume of Ultimate 4 – Advanced design for modern guitar amp

This is the book you want to buy if you feel the need to engage deeply with technology scaling power than Kevin developed. More power, invented and recorded by Kevin, is how you can get aspects distortion power amplifier (as opposed to distortion preamp) in your bedroom volume levels. Volume 4 is not focused on DIY projects but explores the issues, including mitigation, expansion power (both top and bottom), compression and power management addressed by designers modern guitar amp.

However, the second to last chapter in Volume 4 might be important for a group of enthusiasts major manufacturers … The design philosophy. In this chapter, Kevin plans a hierarchical design process could be used to make basic decisions how about your next project.

Ultimate Tone – Modifying and Custom Building Tube Guitar Amplifiers

No volume number in the title of this book was the first. Personally, I Bought for completeness. I specifically wanted the information "perfect loop effects, but the loop itself is embedded in a project in the Volume 5. TUT also has excellent equipment and the reverberations signal a change in method is not explained in the other volumes. The first half introduces TUT / Overview tube amplifier systems, power supplies and the memorandum focuses on amplifiers changes preamplifier and the power of advertising (eg, Marshall / Fender) … if you're totally new to you tube electronics buy this volume together with a volume 3.

The volume of the tone last 6 – Tone timeless built for the future Today

In many ways, Volume 6 is a continuation and extension of the material in Volume 4, which introduces a higher power. In Volume 6 of a new version of "direct control" of Powerscaling appears that was presented in Volume 4, but served with integrated circuits and applies to "give" and maintain control and flight 6. The new scale circuits have many advantages for sure that the manufacturer increase immunity to noise and less sensitivity to the layout, etc.

I applied the new level DC a cloning project and Trainwreck was very impressed with the improvement of "playability" at lower volumes … without changing the circuit Trainwreck Express is too loud for home use, they need to be bent to achieve soft tones is known for.

One chapter of Volume 6 covers amplifiers Dumble … I was hoping something many of my DIY projects focus on the circuits. I found this short chapter a good introduction to the general architecture of Dumble amplifiers, written from the perspective of the evolution of early Alexander Dumble amplifiers amended standard started, but felt the chapter was brief discussion of some of the most important nuances of Dumble models.

Volume 6 also a large amount of material in other, including a great tutorial on designing high power amplifiers for output and a large chapter on circuit designs for high gain amplifier reference in the real world and detailed.

In summary …

books Kevin has a very empirical approach. He invites you to leave out the agreement, in some cases and not be afraid to try combinations pipe or tubing and traction in all cases, clearly explains what is good and remember why it would not be entitled to all the examples in the books are very practical and certainly the builder in mind as you write.

Kevin's body of work is truly encyclopedic, and bearing in mind a bright feature in the absence of his books is any type of indexing … This situation is compounded by the fact that Kevin refers constantly the previous letters instead of repeating the same in a new volume, and it is very difficult to pinpoint the model, even with the other book in hand. Maybe the Google search capability to find protected content could be utilized in this case and provide a sort of "auto-index" in the web of all books by Kevin to give the book without actually yes. Or better yet, how about an electronic book format the complete collection of books by Kevin TUT … I think all readers of electronic books include search capabilities … Kevin and diagrams drawn in hand without doubt an appropriate scale and be easily read on electronic paper displays, these devices offer.
