José Gervasio Artigas Arnal (d. September 23, 1850) is a national hero of Uruguay, sometimes called "the father of Uruguay's independence."

Francisco Esteban Acuña de Figueroa (d. October 6, 1862) was a Uruguayan poet.

Acuña de Figueroa was born in Montevideo, September 20, 1790. Later, his father sent him to study in Buenos Aires, Argentina, but the invasion of City made him return to Montevideo, where he wrote poems while working for his father. There was no printing in Montevideo, so none of his works were published at that time.

Florencio Sanchez (d. November 7, 1910) Uruguay is a playwright, journalist and politician. His artistic work has been developed in the region Río de la Plata (Argentina and Uruguay). It is considered one of the founders of the theater at the Rio de la Plata.

Horacio Quiroga Forteza Silvestre (d. February 19, 1937) was a Uruguayan poet playwright, and (especially) story writer.

He wrote stories, in their community forests, the use of the supernatural and strange to see the struggle of man and animals to survive. Has also excelled in the image of mental illness and hallucinatory states. His influence can be seen in the Latin American magical realism Gabriel García Márquez and Julio Cortázar postmodern surrealism.

Manuel Perez Curis (d. November 22, 1920) was a Uruguayan poet, born in Montevideo, Uruguay.

Apollo Magazine stands out from his works (from art and sociology) that appeared a month, the secretary of the writing was Ovidio Fernandez Rios and architecture of this verse, published in Paris and Mexico. Drunken Poet Agustini in almost all matters, wrote at the Apollo (the poem appears here in 1908, crowns). Within one year 1908, published in journals Alberto Zum Felde, Hyperborea and Lulu Margat. He died of tuberculosis in 1920 in Montevideo.

Scarone Héctor Pedro (d. April 4, 1967) was a Uruguayan footballer. With 31 goals in 52 matches between 1917 and 1930 still holds the record for the highest scorer of all time with the Uruguayan national team.

Enrique Amorim (m. July 28, 1960) was a Uruguayan writer and novelist, best known for its Quitanda story whose plot focuses on prostitution in rural areas, also known for his leftist politics.

Born in Salto, Uruguay, his parents were wealthy farmers. His father was of Portuguese descent, her mother Basque. Amorim has traveled extensively in Europe and Latin America, developing friendships with and acquaintanceships many of the great literary figures of his time. He came to have a house built in Salto, designed by Le Corbusier.

In the 1920 Amorim wrote for the magazine left thinkers in Argentina and published in the brightness of the press, both associated with the slope of Buenos Aires-based Boedo group left. In 1947, Amorim has officially joined the Communist Party of Uruguay. He was also responsible for the erection of a monument to commemorate Leap Federico García Lorca, the poet and playwright murdered by the forces of Francisco Franco in the opening weeks of the Spanish Civil War.

Seler Fernando "Nando" Parrado is a survivor of the crash sixteen Uruguayan Air Force Flight Uruguay 571, which crashed in the Andes on October 13, 1972. After spending two months stuck in the mountains with other survivors of the accident, he, along with Roberto Canessa, rising through the Andes at a time ten days to find help. Their efforts, supported in various ways in the group have been recognized through books and other media.

In 2004 Drexler won wide acclaim after becoming the first Uruguay to win an Oscar. Won for composing the song "Al Otro Lado del Río" Motorcycle Diaries.

Marcelo Filippini is a former professional tennis player from Uruguay.

In 1996, Filippini played what was the long game known in the history of the ATP Tour in Casablanca, is 20 times the devil with Alberto Berasategui loss in round match 6-2, 6-3, in the first place. The game lasted 28 minutes.

Filippini best performance in a Grand Slam tournament was at the French Open in 1999 where he (as a qualifier, without losing a single set) in the quarterfinals before being defeated by the eventual champion, Andre Agassi.

He also played for the Uruguay national football team and participated in the 2002 FIFA World Cup.

Gonzalo Sorondo Amaro is a Uruguayan footballer who plays defense for International Brazil.

Gonzalo Sorondo began his career at Uruguayan club Defensor Sporting Club, moving to Inter in 2001. In 2003 he was loaned to Belgian club Standard Liege. Crystal Palace took him on loan in August 2004 when he played in the Premier League. A year later, another loan, this time at Charlton, was confirmed in July 2005, after obtaining a work permit. In the summer of 2006, he became a free agent and sign a new contract with Charlton.

He was a regular member of the Uruguay national team, making his debut against Colombia August 15, 2000, and played for his country at the 2002 FIFA World Cup, but has always fallen in the past years due injuries and limited league.

He also played in 1999 FIFA World Youth Championship with a fourth place (now known that FIFA U-20 World Cup).

Sorondo was released by Charlton Athletic in February 2007 and returned to the Ombudsman.

Today he plays International in Brazil.

Cobra Starship is signed to the Decaydance label. The band Cobra Starship released their second album Viva La Cobra! On October 23, 2007. Her third album, Hot Mess, was released August 11, 2009, and debuted at No. 4 the Billboard 200 albums with sales of over 42,000.
