Education and early years (19851987)

Dream Theater was formed in September 1985, when guitarist John Petrucci and bassist John Myung decided form a group in their time for free study at Berklee College of Music. The couple met drummer Mike Portnoy in one of the rehearsal rooms of Berklee, where he was invited to join the group. The trio began covering Iron Maiden and Rush songs in the rehearsal rooms to Berklee.
Myung, Petrucci and Portnoy settled on the name Majesty for his new band. The first months of 1986 were filled with concert dates in and around the New York area. Meanwhile, the band recorded a collection of demos, titled The Demos Majesty. Mike Portnoy started a series of official bootlegs in response to Dream Theater fans affinity "for versions of their live concerts. Dream Theater is one of the most active groups contraband in the genre of progressive metal. Since his first exhibition in New York fans, Majesty, have recorded almost every show that Dream Theater played (sometimes three or four versions of a single concert), and some very elaborate and professional recordings have been released.
However, all band members approved the release of Dream Theater bootlegs. Portnoy is the newest member of pro-piracy since I am an avid collector bootlegs well in their youth and maintain their own personal archive of Dream Theater material in his basement. Petrucci and Labrie expressed their opposition to save people their concerts. Petrucci takes issue with bootleggers because he prefers the public to focus on the musicians on stage, not adjust the level of your recording device. LaBrie the other hand, argues that smuggling takes possession and control of theatrical sleeping outside the strip and into the hands of the public. Myung has expressed mild opposition smuggling, but in some interviews has mentioned that not all big problem with him.
Dream Theater has launched a series of official bootlegs, demos and other rarities from Ytsejam folders, headed by Portnoy. Included demos of the band before setting official albums and many shows, including shows where the group has covered a particular album. Top covered include The Dark Side of the Moon, made in Japan, Master of Puppets, and the number of the beast.
