With the stability that Dominici's appointment brought to Her Majesty, they began to increase the number of shows played in and around New York, winning a considerable amount of exposure.

Shortly after hiring Dominici, a Las Vegas group also named Majesty threatened legal action for copyright infringement related to the use of his name, so the group was forced to adopt a new name. In his search for a new singer They auditioned over 200 people, among them former Fates Warning front man John Arch, and they all refused. In mid-1990, during a concert in New York Dream Theater has presented Steve Stone as the new singer. He played only three songs with the group before he was dismissed for less than adequate. It was five months before Dream Theater has played another show, this time completely instrumental (as Ytsejam). In January 1991, Kevin James LaBrie, the glam metal band Winter Rose, was transferred flight from Canada to New York for an audition. LaBrie jammed on three songs with the band, and was immediately hired to fill the position of vocalist. Derek Shulman and ATCO Records (now EastWest), a division of Elektra Records, Dream Theater has signed seven albums based on a three-song demo (later made available to "The ATCO Demos" through sleep club fan film.)

Forward to working with fresh material Dream Theater retired the studio in May 1994. Awake, Dream Theater third studio album, was released October 4, 1994, in a hail of controversy among fans. Shortly before the album was mixed, Moore announced to the rest of the band that just was not interested in travel, or for style music by Dream theater and stop dreaming of theater to concentrate on his own musical tastes. Accordingly, the band struggling to find a replacement keyboardist before a trip could be considered. The album was well received by critics and fans. The album was seen by some as Dream Theater album darker, mainly because the lyrical content with most of the songs that deal with internal conflicts. For example, "The Mirror" explores the theme of alcoholism, Portnoy who was recovering at the time.

Jens Johansson, who was to become a member of Stratovarius, was one of the biggest names at the hearing, but group members were eager to fill the position with keyboardist Jordan Rudess. Portnoy, Petrucci and Rudess was found in Keyboard Magazine, where he was recognized as "the best new talent" in the readership survey. Both had invited to play a concert with the test strip in the Forum of concrete foundations in Burbank, California. members of Dream Theater, the show was very well, and Rudess was asked to fill the keyboardist position permanently but Rudess opted for a tour with The Dixie Dregs time because it gave more personal freedom. Once again found a new member, Dream Theater has not respond immediately start working on new material. Fans from around the world, united in Ytsejam mailing list (the most popular form communication between dream theater lovers at the time) had begun to exert pressure on the tape to officially launch the song "A Change of Seasons. "Was written in 1989 and was intended to be a part of imagery and words, but in about 17 minutes, was considered too long instead of study. However, the band performs live from time to time as he continues his examination in the years before 1995.

The petition was successful and the group came BearTracker Studios in New York in May 1995 to write and record the song after 23 minutes with help Sherinian significantly to the final product. Share "A Change of Seasons" band, he released an EP with a collection of covers recorded live in the club fan outdoor concert.

After a small concert to promote short-term change of seasons Dream Theater has made a break for a few months. To keep busy, However, the group released a Christmas CD by their official fan club, consisting of rare live tracks recorded during the first years of the band. Following publication a new CD every Christmas until 2005. Also during the break for individual members to write compositions for their forthcoming sessions collaborative writing.

Meanwhile, there have been several changes to the East-West and Dream Theater main contact within the label is activated. Consequently, the new team in the company were not used to the relationship with Dream Theater was EastWest former staff members and pushed a Dream Theater to write an album that was more accessible. In mid 1997, he entered the studio to write the next album. And more pressure on the band to adopt a more commercial sound, EastWest recruited screenwriter / producer Desmond Child to work with Petrucci on polishing the lyrics of her song "You or me." Any band substantially reworked the music of the song, and appeared on the album as "you're not me" with a choir was just a remnant of the original. Children also had a significant impact on the album, with a shift towards compositions that were less complex and more radio-friendly.

The band wrote almost two CDs of material, including a 20-minute follow-up Images and Words song "Metropolis Part 1: miracle and "Sleeper. The label, however, does not permit the publication of a double album because he felt that a record of 140 minutes would not acceptable to the general public. James LaBrie also felt that the Conference should be a single disc. unused songs were released more Later in the release Ytsejam Records On Falling Into Infinity Demos.

The material was right on the album was released as Falling Into Infinity, which received a mixed reception fans who were more familiar with his previous group. Although the album was pretty solid progressive songs like "Hollow Years" and "You Not Me" prompted some to believe it was the dawn of a new wave of Dream Theater. In general, the album was both a critical and commercial disappointment. Although Portnoy did not speak publicly in the same time, several years later, in 2004 DVD commentary for 5 years in a Livetime, revealed he had been so discouraged during this period had seen Dream Theater completely dissolved.

During the European leg of world tour of the infinite, two shows were to record a live album entitled "Once in a LiveTime, France and the Netherlands. The album was released at the same time as the video 5 years a Livetime, which tells of the time from when Kevin Moore left the band for the promotional tour Falling Into Infinity.

Scenes from a Memory and Metropolis 2000 (19992001)

In 1997, Magna Carta Records' Mike Varney invited Portnoy to assemble a progressive "supergroup" to work on a album, which to become the first in a series of side projects of members of Dream Theater. The training consisted of Portnoy on drums, Petrucci at guitar, Tony Levin on bass, and keyboardist Jordan Rudess, who finished with the Dixie Dregs. The group took the name Liquid Tension Experiment, and act as a means which Rudess and Portnoy, Petrucci could once again the court to join Dream Theater. In 1999 he accepted an offer to become the third full-time Dream Theater keyboardist to replace Sherinian.

With another new member, Dream Theater returns BearTracker Studio to write and record their next album. Following an ultimatum Portnoy, the label gave the band complete creative control. Track "Metropolis Part 1" which was written during the Falling Into Infinity sessions (But not used in this album), was removed from the platform for reprocessing. Decided to extend the 20-minute song into a concept album complete with a story built around themes such as reincarnation, murder and treason. To avoid stirring up the fan base, a tight veil of secrecy enveloped the process of writing and recording. The fans that things were in power before his release was a list of titles that have been disclosed against the wishes of the band, and a release date. In 1999, Metropolis Pt 2: Scenes from a Memory was released to high critical. It was hailed as Dream Theater masterpiece by many critics as fans and, despite reaching # 73 on U.S. charts.

The album was mixed by David Bottrill, but only a few of your mixes made in the final album. Most have been remixed by Kevin Shirley. Other mixes can be heard on the concert band's official "The realization of a memory scenes."

A world tour followed by recording the album, taking over a year to complete, by far its most important at this time. The concerts will reflect the look of the theater of the album. They played scenes from a memory album, from beginning to end, with a video screen on the back wall scene showing a narrative companion album. In addition to playing the album in its entirety, the group also had a second of Dream Theater songs and some covers and improvisations old dream theater equipment. For a very special show at the Roseland Ballroom in New York, actors were hired to play characters in the story, and a gospel choir was asked to complete certain sections of the performance.

This show, the Last date North American tour, was recorded for the first DVD version of the group. After many technical delays, the DVD entitled Metropolis 2000, was released in early 2001. Shortly after, the group announced that an audio version of the concert, with every four hours the set-list (most of which had to be cut from the DVD to save space) would be released.

Coverage the CD version of the concert, titled Live Scenes from New York, Dream Theater is an early logos (the images and words from the heart was burning, the model Sacred Heart of Jesus Christ), modified to show the result of an apple (as in "Big Apple") in place of the heart, and roofs New York, including the twin towers of the World Trade Center, the flame above. In an unfortunate coincidence, the album was released on the same date as September 11. The album was quickly called by the band and was reissued with revised later works of art.

The first disc consisted of five runs of 713 minutes and the second disc was devoted entire 42-minute song, which is to date the longest song Dream Theater has written. The genesis of this song was when I wrote that Rudess The "Overture" from "Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence "and the group has taken different melodies and ideas contained in these chapters have been expanded and a full history.

Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence ended up being very well received by critics and the press. It was the most publicity of Dream Theater albums since Awake, debuting on Billboard at # 46 and the Billboard Internet charts at # 1. The "Escape from study trip to America," was referred to as dream theater promotional materials, was Queensrÿche and Dream Theater as a co-starring with events Fates Warning performing rights support act. As the end of each concert there was a point spread in which the two Dream Theater and Queensrÿche performed together on stage at the same time, often playing covers.

After the tour, Dream Theater returned to the studio to finish recording his seventh album, Train of Thought. Concentrate more on writing great songs based on album cover a mentality inspired by Master of Puppets and the number of the beast in a previous concert tour. Accordingly, its more straight metal album of the two seemed to drag in the process of thought. The album was a critical success, but alienated much of Dream Theater fans [who?] who preferred the traditional progressive rock like Yes or King Crimson. In any case, it seemed to expand Dream Theater fan base into new territory, capturing many more metal fans.

Another world tour during which Dream Theater served as a support act for one of his major influences, Yes, a modest tour of North America has been completed by two bands, after which Dream Theater continued across the world with his so-called "An Evening With Dream Theater" shows.

His next step was to release another live CD / DVD combination, this time recorded at the famous Nippon Budokan Hall in Tokyo, Japan, around the world train of thought. Live performances

Throughout his career, Dream Theater live shows have gradually become bigger, longer and more diverse. The most obvious is its list rotation set policy. That is, every night of every tour has developed its list by Portnoy using a laborious process that guarantees its uniqueness. Factors such as lists of all cities above are considered to ensure that people who see Dream Theater multiple times within the same region will not see the same songs performed twice, and even list the last time the band was in a particular city is taken into account for the benefit of fans who see the band on successive visits.

To this end, the group prepares to play most of its catalog in any action, as determined by Portnoy scheduled for tonight. This process also requires the use of a lighting system complex light calculation of predefined signals based on individual songs.

There is also a significant amount of humor, informality and improvisation coupled with a performance of Dream Theater. Amid "A Change of Seasons" is quite common for themes such as Major League Baseball and The Simpsons to be quoted, and Rudess routinely modifies his section solo in the song and others, often playing the ragtime section of "When the water falls" Liquid Tension Experiment 2. Several songs Once upon a LiveTime fragments include pieces of others, like "Free Bird" by Lynyrd Skynyrd and Rimsky-Korsakov's "Flight of the Bumblebee." Other quotations include "Mary Had a Little Lamb" on "Endless Sacrifice" on the Gigantour, a calliope-inspired break between verses of "Under a glass moon ", a quote from" Do not Cry for Me, Argentina "from the main melody played by Petrucci in the exercise of the intro solo in their eyes "in Buenos Aires, the Turkish March at a concert in Istanbul, and the opening riff of Rush" A Passage to Bangkok "in a lounge in Bangkok, Thailand. In the most recent "20th Anniversary World Tour" Rudess has even thrown in a short "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star "theme during a break in" Endless Sacrifice ", and at a concert in Israel began spontaneously" Hava-Nagilla "more later, accompanied by the rest of the band.

Sometimes an audience member is randomly selected to perform on stage, an example that can be seen in Portnoy drum solo on the Live at Budokan DVD. There have been many interpretations impromptu "Happy Birthday" when a band member or crew a birthday for a date in the tour, which usually results in a birthday cake that occurs in the subject.

Perhaps the best example of Dream Theater structure concert unpredictable is that during Derek Sherinian time with the band. In the sample of group members all switched instruments and performed a reminder that the fictional band called Nightmare Entertainment. Usually performed a cover of Deep Purple "Perfect Strangers" and in one case, Ozzy Osbourne's "Suicide Solution." In some programs, Sherinian, Petrucci and Portnoy would take the stage together under the name "Nicky Lemons Brothers and migraine. Sherinian wearing a feather boa and novelty sunglasses, it makes a pop-punk song "I Do not Like You" with Petrucci and Portnoy support. In the chaos in motion tour of several concerts before "Trial of Tears", Portnoy and Petrucci is moved and playing Van Halen's "Eruption".

Dream Theater wider audience than the main act was 20,000 in Santiago, Chile on December 6, 2005. It was during his first tour countries of South America, except Brazil (which had visited in 1997 and 1998). The program has been released on DVD by Portnoy Ytsejam Records.

In the notation and Chaos in Motion DVD movie has parts of songs together, which shows the band playing along to music as cartoon characters. In the score when the DVD song Octavarium, the band performed in a labyrinth of octagonal shape. As the movie continues Jordan Rudess becomes spontaneously Santa Claus John Petrucci and caught fire. In "The Dark Eternal Night" from the Chaos in Motion DVD, the band battles with balls fired monster guitars, sticks, and screaming.

In 2008, Dream Theater has begun the "Progressive Nation '08" tour with Opeth, Between the Buried and Me, and 3. The visit is a Mike Portnoy creation, who said. "I was interested in getting a package like this for many years with all the festivals and package tours pass in America, I talked with our manager and agent for over 10 years to do something that focuses on the more progressive side musician-oriented hard rock and metal. I decided it was time to stop talking about maintenance, lace, and finally walking. "

Since his first exhibition in New York fans, Majesty, have recorded almost every show that Dream Theater played (sometimes three or four versions of a single concert), and some very elaborate and professional recordings have been released.

However, all band members approved the release of Dream Theater bootlegs. Portnoy is the newest member of pro-piracy since I am an avid collector bootlegs well in their youth and maintain their own personal archive of Dream Theater material in his basement. Petrucci and Labrie expressed their opposition to save people their concerts. Petrucci takes issue with bootleggers because he prefers the public to focus on the musicians on stage, not adjust the level of your recording device. LaBrie the other hand, argues that smuggling takes possession and control of theatrical sleeping outside the strip and into the hands of the public. Myung has expressed mild opposition smuggling, but in some interviews has mentioned that not all big problem with him.

Dream Theater has launched a series of official bootlegs, demos and other rarities from Ytsejam folders, headed by Portnoy. Included demos of the band before setting official albums and many shows, including shows where the group has covered a particular album. Top covered include The Dark Side of the Moon, made in Japan, Master of Puppets, and the number of the beast.

Blankets

Dream Theater has been called cover the work of other artists throughout his career. They took this practice to a new level during the promotional tour for Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence. In particular, three concerts, one in Barcelona, Chicago and New York, they covered Metallica's Master of Puppets album in its entirety after a full set of Dream Theater material. It was a surprise for the fans, because there was no indication that happen outside to announce that concerts in question, which were on the second night of a two-night stand in each city would be "special." This tradition can most likely be traced to one of Mike Portnoy's favorite bands, Phish, who began performing a series of "musical costumes" of entire albums of other artists each Halloween since 1994. Portnoy devised this "album cover" the first of a series of concerts to be played as a tribute to bands that have influenced the formation and development of Dream Theater. Set includes divided many fans who attended the show, with people saying it was a sight to see Dream Theater original music and not the work of another artist. Others, however, said he was a bonus and not a replacement for a normal Dream Theater, like a regular concert was played yesterday.

In the next stage of the tour covered the number of the beast Iron Maiden and received a Master of Puppets similar reaction, even if you knew it was a cover for carry out that night because the itinerary included two nights in a city unique. October 11, 2005, Dream Theater covered Pink Floyd The Dark Side of the Moon. Dream Theater official website said that the second joint second night in Amsterdam, London, Buenos Aires, Sao Paulo and Tokyo (October 11, 1925 October, December 4, 1911 December and January 1913 respectively), and also the second game of the January 15 show in Osaka, it would be a classic album covered in its entirety. The Dark Side of the Moon was played again on October 25 in London. However, Buenos Aires (December 4) and São Paulo (December 11) the Classical Album "played was the dream of self Theater Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a memory to compensate for not having visited Argentina and Brazil in their Metropolis 2000 tour. On January 13, 2006 (Tokyo) and 15 (Osaka), Dream Theater covered live album Made in Japan Deep Purple. Portnoy said he has provided a game show, but refuses to reveal what will happen, or what the album will be covered.

During Gigantour 2005, Dream Theater has made a recovery of "Cemetery Gates" by Pantera as a tribute to "Dimebag" Darrell Lance Abbott. As a bonus, had Burton C. Bell of Fear Factory, and Russell Allen of Symphony X and guest vocalist Dave Mustaine of Megadeth, not the main solo of the song.

In March 2006, Dream Theater Rush rarely played the song "Jacob's Ladder "at a concert in Toronto. John Petrucci, said a few days later in Asbury Park, New Jersey, before the show that night," Rush does not play, so we thought it would be better to play with them. "

In addition, Dream Theater has released a couple covers Live on their EP A Change of Seasons, including songs by Elton John, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Queen, Pink Floyd, Genesis, Journey, Dixie Dregs and Kansas.

In 2008, recorded a version of Iron Maiden To Tame a Land "for a compilation entitled Maiden Heaven Kerrang. This song was later included in the edition especially the black clouds and Silver Linings

Dream Theater has also recorded a series of covers of songs from their album Black Clouds and Silver Linings 2009. Songs came as an extra disc special edition version of the album.

Dream Theater has played "Hava Nagila", the song Traditional Jewish, in "Metropolis Pt 1:. The miracle and the sleeper" in a sold-out concert in Tel Aviv, Israel on June 16, 2009.

On August 14, 2009 at a concert in Toronto, Dream Theater has played Rush song "The Camera Eye", which was originally released on the album Rush moving pictures.
